Her Story – Alison Hardacre

Alison describes herself as a former ‘corporate refugee’, now a global health technology entrepreneur and co-founder of global healthcare platform HealthKit.

Alison worked across sales, marketing, operations and technology in the banking and health insurance industries, but realised that the startup world was her true calling. She supplemented her work experience with board and management roles in the health space, specifically healthcare policy, delivery and growth opportunities.

These days, HealthKit takes up most of her time. HealthKit is the first global health platform for doctors and patients anywhere in the world, aspiring to make healthcare more effective and accessible.

Alison always wanted to make a venture of some sort, but instead of searching for articles in the AFR, she focused on which sectors she could service. She felt an online platform would be most effective, particularly in the healthcare space, which reluctantly was going through the process of digitation and automation. Initially she found it difficult to source funding and had to leverage off international student interns and backpackers for human capital!

Alison wanted to grow and dominate a sector worldwide, which nowadays HealthKit is well on the way to doing. It operates in 50 different countries, encompassing practice management software, searchable practitioner directories, health tracking tools and shared health records.

Advice for Others – Alison Hardacre

In balancing her engagements and activities with her co-founder, particularly when their roles have changed over time, Alison has found segmenting the work in and on the business from a strategical and operational perspective to be key.

Further to this, she believes you can’t live life by other people’s expectations. Be resourceful in your ventures and focus on building the right culture around the outcomes you aspire to.

Finally, she feels it is important to be careful of the advice you take on board - ‘the best advice comes from someone who’s actually done it’.

Key Habits – Alison Hardacre

Alison has learnt to be honest with herself about what she’s working on and what she should be working on. This includes identifying when she’s procrastinating, and always being okay to ask for help if need be.

Quote – Alison Hardacre

A story from the TV Series ‘The West Wing’

“This guy is walking down a street when he falls into a hole. The walls are so steep that he can't get out. A doctor passes by, and the guy shouts up, "hey you can you help me out?".  The doctor writes a prescription, throws it down in the hole and moves on.

Then a priest comes along, and the guy shouts up, "father I'm down in this hole can you help me out?".  The Priest writes a prayer, throws it down the hole and moves on.

Then a friend walks by.  "Hey Jo, its me can you help me out?" The friend jumps in the hole.  The guy says "are you stupid, now we're both down here".  The friend says, "yea, but I’ve been down here before and I know the way out”.
