Our first episode will provide an insight into the Property Planner, David Johnston, the company he founded in 2004, and why he passionately believes that we all should have a Property Plan to navigate our lifetime’s property decisions so that we all can create our ideal lifestyle.
David is the founder and Managing Director of Property Planning Australia and the author of ‘How to Succeed with Property to Create your Ideal Lifestyle; and ‘Property for Life – Using Property to Plan Your Financial Future’ published by Wiley.
David’s vision is to educate and empower Australians to create their own personalised property plan. He passionately believes in fiercely independent advice and his company provides what he calls ‘pure planning’ advice where the plans, strategy’s and reports have all been created by Property Planning Australia. They are the only property advisory firm in Australia free from earning fees through buying or selling property, or selling any investment, insurance or super products. His goal is to remove conflict of interests from their advice and his primary driving principle is to think how do Property Planning Australia’s values separate them from the market place?
Fiercely independent. Profoundly informative.

Who is David?
David is the Founder and Managing Director of Property Planning Australia; educating, empowering and enabling people to create their ideal lifestyle since 2004.
The company takes a four-pillar approach spanning Property Education, Mortgage Strategy, Money Management and Risk Management, providing independent and targeted advice to their client base. Tune in to the episode to hear more not only about what David has done, but also why he does it.
What Does He Stand For?
There is a distinct vision and a robust set of principles behind what David has created. He firmly stands by the notion that we all should have a property plan to navigate life and the decisions it brings, and wants to educate and inspire Australians to create their own plan.
In 2004, David looked around and saw a heaving financial planning industry – but no property planning industry. He pioneered property advisory to provide independent, considered and tailored advice with the diligence and experience that all clients deserve. After all, we raise our families in our home. For a lot of us, it is the most expensive and delicate decision we’ll ever make.
What Does He Do?
In ensuring clients receive the care and consideration in Property Planning Australia’s hands, there is a distinct process that each client undertakes to find out what they want and how to get there.
In the initial planningstage, Property Planning Australia helps clients to understand their key outcomes and principles. This extends to their goals, their values, appetite for risk and a robust understanding of their personal circumstances. It’s about looking forwards and working backwards – envisioning what they want to achieve and working out a way to deliver on those propositions.
The plan is finalised, formalised and crucially there is a collective buy-in from all parties. The Property Planning Australia team then unpacks that desired lifestyle and investment pathway and defines the core strategy. The considerations are modelled and assessed in creating mortgage and money management strategies to lead the team forward.
The third step to the process, and one that will be unpacked in the upcoming episodes, is to select. Our jobs change, our families change and our lives change. So it’s one thing to plan and strategise, but another to execute.
Part of the podcast is also equipping you with insights from the expertise and experience of the hosts, and so the property tips for this episode are nothing short of essential.
David the Planner believes that for the initial meeting, he’d love his clients to walk through the door with an open mind and a clear vision on what they’d like their future to be. Peter the Professor wants clients to clearly define and describe their goals. Whether it is to retire richer, retire earlier, supplement your income or work part-time, it helps them to channel and focus their property and lifestyle decision-making.
